Day 1 takes you west: Paúl da Serra plateau, the magical Fanal laurel forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Portugal's 7 Natural Wonders), the volcanic lava pools of Porto Moniz for a swim, Seixal waterfall and the vertiginous Cabo Girão sea cliffs. Day 2 heads east: Machico bay (site of the 1419 Portuguese landing), Porto da Cruz rum distillery, Santana's iconic thatched houses, the summit of Pico do Arieiro at 1,818m above the clouds, and the dramatic volcanic coastline of Ponta de São Lourenço.
